Going mobile (in a new way)

31 March, 2008 (02:51) | Internet, Software, Webdesign | By: Andreas

I get a surprising amount of questions about publishing versions of my templates for mobile phones and small screens, and I have considered those questions a bit strange since my templates are all-valid XHTML and thereby fully functional in most modern mobile phone browsers. I have tested all my templates with three different mobile phones and five different browsers, and the content in each template is completely readable even though there are a number of not-so-pretty design glitches caused by some browsers rendering of the CSS.

But the mobile internet has always been separated from the real thing, mostly because of the limitations that small screens create - and by bandwidth. I have seen several attempts at handling mobile pages differently by reducing bandwidth use and manipulating the look of the content so that it works well with smaller screens. I would prefer to see all websites use valid XHTML and let the mobile internet just be a scaled-down version of the real thing - but that is not likely to happen so an alternative would be very useful. One such alternative, and a really interesting one is Squace.

Squace is a new application that makes mobile surfing and sharing easier. It’s a freeware mobile browser drastically reducing number of clicks and loading time, and thereby cost of traffic. It has a grid-like interface - a series of tiny squares which you scroll over to discover content or browse your favourite links - and it's a effective effort making a navigation system which suits the mobile screen. You can easily create your blog and make it available to other Squace users. Another cool thing is the use for everday life, like the one where schools or kindergartens put up their own sites and gives parents an easy tool to keep track on schedules and phone numbers to teachers (and to other parents) with only a few clicks, or your local restaurant could post the menu of the week. It looks very promising, much thanks to the simplicity.

A friend of mine is working at Squace and they're planning a new release in a couple of weeks, including an improved website and registration-free software. A wordpress plugin or widget is very likely in the works, which should make it easier than ever to blog from the mobile phone and stay up-to-date with other blogs through the grid. If you are curious about it, check out the website!

Ryzom community action

2 December, 2006 (17:12) | Internet, Software | By: Andreas

Ryzom, an innovative online game that has several years of history, is threatened since the software company behind it is in financial problems. In an effort to save the game, a part of the Ryzom community has launched a campaign where the target is to gather donations to buy the game and then turn Ryzom into a free, community-controlled game project. It has been done before, when the 3D modeling package Blender was purchased by a large number of users, and the community will do everything they can to make it happen again.

I found out about this since the campaign website was built with one of my templates (andreas00), but that is not why I post this entry. This is an example of a real community problem, with extremely valid reasons, and how a community can work together to change things for the better. Or even save a project from crashing completely. No matter if you know the game or not, I recommend you to visit the campaign site and help spreading the word.

Edit: BBC writes about the campaign

Tool updates

9 November, 2006 (03:49) | Software, Webdesign, WordPress | By: Andreas

Just a quick update about updates and new versions of some of the tools I work with every day…

Software

A new version of my favorite CSS design tool, Style Master, has been released. It is version 4.6, and among the news it has IE7 added to the browser list. If you are interested in CSS-based web design I warmly recommend you to try Style Master, it is simply a great tool (commercial, US$60).

And while I'm into design software, I also found a new version of my favorite code editor, Notepad++ (freeware). Version 3.9 has been out for more than a month, but it is still new to me.

CMS / Scripts

WordPress has also been updated, this time into version 2.0.5. I'm planning to upgrade this site today, but I'm still waiting impatiently for version 2.1 which has lots of new features that I'm looking forward to use. I'm running a recent nightly build (labelled as v2.1-alpha3) on one of my test servers, but even though it works really good so far I'm not brave enough to use an alpha version on my main site…

And finally, sNews v1.5 by Solucija is out in a third release candidate. I have tested it, and I will definitely want to use it in future projects. If you need a well-structured, lightweight, simple and easy-to-learn content management system for your site, it could be a great idea to give sNews (which is free and open sourced) a shot. If you want to learn more about sNews, also check out these resource sites: sNews.ca, Free-CSS-Templates, mysNews and the sNews forum.

Style Master 4.5 released!

6 May, 2006 (01:59) | Software, Template news, Webdesign | By: Andreas

A new version of the brilliant CSS editor Style Master has been released! The new version (v4.5) adds more fresh features that makes it very useful for anyone who work with stylesheets. I use it every day since I consider Style Master to be the best CSS editor of them all, and that makes it a true pleasure to announce that the new version of Style Master includes all my free templates - including a previously unreleased template that was originally made for my employer, Jokkmokk.biz (which I am redesigning over the next couple of days).

The full version of Style Master costs from $59.99, but there is of course a free demo version that you can try out for 30 days. Give it a try! Chances are big that you'll fall in love with it, like I did. If you don't, then you haven't lost anything - and you have still got a few templates to play with. If you try the demo, please let me know what you think of the new Jokkmokk template. I will make it available here too, but I will wait for the initial feedback and fix any errors that are found.
