Daleri for Blogger?

12 July, 2007 (12:35) | Themes, Webdesign, WordPress | By: Andreas

Since the release of the first two Daleri themes for WordPress I have got a number of requests from users of other blogging tools, asking me to release versions of the designs for Blogger and sNews among other systems. Extracting the design from the WordPress themes can be a bit hard, so I will do it for you and release both theme designs as regular XHTML/CSS-templates as well. If anyone who reads this would want to do a port of the template, let me know and I'll send it over as soon as it is ready.

New WordPress theme: Daleri Selection

31 May, 2007 (05:01) | Themes, Webdesign, WordPress | By: Andreas

The second theme in the Daleri design series has now been quietly and carefully released, so I can get some feedback on it. You can download Daleri Selection at the official WordPress Theme Viewer, and on popular demant I chose to release the more advanced 3-column version with a horizontal page menu instead of the more simple 2-column version that you can see on the Daleri.com site. Please let me know if you find some errors or problems, or if you miss some important feature that should be there.

This new theme is also the base for my new site design, which will be launched later today. Don't expect it to be much cooler than the theme, you should know by know that I like simple, functional and useful designs rather than flashy and impressive stuff. But there will be a few upgrades. For example, I've spent many hours on the header image! I have also added a widget which I think should be included with WordPress by default, the subpages widget (which is very useful if you use Daleri Selection).

Proper releases, screenshots and additional information about both the WP-themes Daleri Dark and Daleri Selection and their XHTML/CSS-based template versions will follow quickly after the new theme goes live. I'm not very happy about adding content before I switch to the new theme, so the next you see here will be the new look.

Theme variations and sponsorships

28 May, 2007 (03:13) | Site news, Webdesign, WordPress | By: Andreas

One of the things I have planned for a long time that will be launched at the same time as the new design (tomorrow, always this tomorrow…) will be theme variations. Pre-created customized versions of the themes, based on common requests from users and other designers. For example, a lot of people have asked me for Swedish versions of my themes, so translations are ready to be released. And others have asked for wider versions of the WP-Andreas00 and WP-Andreas01 themes for WordPress, and I will provide that as well.

Each theme will get its own page, where all these custom versions (and other modifications) will be listed with direct download links. Want a light version of Daleri Dark? Or a 3-column version of 1024px? If the demand is big, I will create it and add it to the list.

What kind of variations would you like to see to the themes in the future? Let me know, your opinion matters! This will apply to the website templates as well so feel free to write in comments for those as well. But please keep in mind that the templates will take much longer time for me to create all those variations since I will have more than 20 templates to work with when the new ones are released…

To see one really beautiful example of what a modified theme can look like, you can visit the newly launched website of the Ájtte Museum here in Jokkmokk. The site is based on a wider version of WP-Andreas00 with a number of small changes - and translated to Swedish. It is probably the prettiest site I have seen using that design, the enlarged header and the large amounts of beutiful photos add a lot of value to the design…

Tomorrow? Are you sure?

No, I am never sure. And I know that you know that by now. But I am happy to announce that I have now found the first andreasviklund.com site sponsor - so now I have only two sponsoring spots available:

The new "sponsored links #2" - A set of links in the sidebar of all pages except the frontpage. The frontpage links are managed by Text-link-ads.com, but I was not able to add a second set of links for other pages than the frontpage so I will do it manually. Currently 8 link slots free, sold for 3, 6 or 12 months at the time.

The "template sponsor" slots - Sponsorships for ALL my templates (and soon also WP-themes). Each template and theme page (which means the page on andreasviklund.com which includes screenshots, add-ons, additional images, template comments, tips and hints and the variations that I have described earlier in this post - NOT any page in the template itself!) will have space reserved for a sponsored link or a small image banner. Once paid for, the sponsorship lasts for as long as the template is available - probably for several years. Each new template release means a new sponsorship slot, and based on the big interest for this idea I think that it will be very popular. I don't know what this may be worth, but I welcome bids and offers to get a starting point. I guess that andreas01 will be the first one to go!

The whole idea with putting more ads on the site is to allow me to work with making templates and giving free support as a full-time job. If everything works out as I want to, I will soon be working in a team with my girlfriend Johanna - based on the lovely business model that makes it possible to make a living from giving away things for free. That will only work with the help of sponsors, generous donations from people who use the templates for commercial purposes and my percentage for sales from the commercial template store, but it looks perfectly possible now so we are going to give it a try!

But I am always careful about ads, and I can assure you that they will not become disturbing. They fit greatly into the new design (which I'm testing on my secret test site right now). There will be no flash, only small image banners (if any at all, currently there are no images) and no AdSense, minimalls, ebay auctions or anything like that. All links will be clearly marked as sponsored links, but they are still placed in visible places to make sure that the kind and helpful sponsors and advertisers get the attention that they deserve. If you like my work, I hope that you will accept this and support my sponsors. Their help will result in lots of new templates, many new themes, much better support (not only from me but also from Johanna!) and hopefully a real blog!

Yes, I'm planning to become a blogger as well. For real! One that actually writes interesting posts every now and then. It is a little fantasy of mine, it would be a fun thing to do. Especially since my site would be my full-time job. But we'll see… For now, the new design is priority #1. Let's hope for a good tomorrow!

WP-theme: Daleri Dark

25 May, 2007 (01:58) | Template news, Themes, Webdesign, WordPress | By: Andreas

Here is the first new release in a long time. The first WordPress theme in the new "Daleri" design series has now been released, and it was given the name Daleri Dark.

Please note that it is not the final release. The theme is still in an early stage of development, and it will be updated with both new features and other changes as soon as I have got some feedback on it. Don't expect it to be good, and please keep in mind that it has a couple of experimental features that you need to use with care. But feel free to play around with it, try different things and let me know if you find something useful that I can add to the theme!

And whatever you do, don't judge the new template series from this first theme. It will be a good mix, just like the andreasXX series. The WordPress themes page is terribly bad right now, but it is only temporary while I re-organize the content for the upcoming design refresh. Once the new design goes live, each template and theme will have its own page on the site where you will find additional material and replacement images among other things.

Right now, two new WordPress themes are in the final stage of editing now: Daleri Diary (a simple 2-column blog layout) and Daleri Selection (more advanced 3-column portal design that was built for andreasviklund.com). Which of those two would you want to see on Daleri.com next?

WordPress themes updated

22 May, 2007 (07:18) | Themes, Webdesign, WordPress | By: Andreas

All my WordPress themes have been updated to make sure that the excellent WordPress.com stats plugin can be used with the themes. There are also a number of other updates, mostly minor changes. Bigger updates will follow soon, when the new theme gallery of this site will launch on this page.

The most notable update for today is that there are no links to other external sites in the themes any more, only the credit links to my website and to my WordPress theme page. My WordPress themes contain no sponsored links, and that should be clear to everyone now.

Go get them from the official WordPress Theme Viewer:

Introducing: Daleri

Coming up next will be the theme you see on my sandbox site Daleri.com! "Daleri" has been the silly working name for the new template/theme series that I have been working with for quite some time now, but I haven't found any better name so I'd better not waste any more time on chasing a good name and just release the code instead. Will it work? Or does it mean something really ugly on some language? Let me know what you think, and feel free to try the theme for yourself.

Unlike the andreasXX series, Daleri will be a bit more focused on artwork and a structure that encourage users to be a bit experimental and playful. The templates may not be very easy to use for CSS beginners, and the themes may not be the best "activate and go!" choice for non-technical WordPress bloggers. But if you take the time to learn the idea behind the designs and customize them to fit your own style, the result will hopefully be a bit more stylish than the average template or theme. Atleast, that is the idea behind the entire concept. I will follow it up with the add-on material and separate template pages that I have mentioned in a previous post, and additional material is something you will see a lot of on this site in the future. And it will of course be free to download, just like the templates. It is a wild idea, but I think it can work! More about that later…

For now I'm interested in comments and opinions about the first preview of the first release in the series: Daleri Launch. If you want to try it yourself, let me know and I'll send it over. Here is a screenshot:
