Numbers go wild

31 March, 2006 (00:08) | General, Site news | By: Andreas

In the last two days, my andreas01 template has been downloaded in more than 51.000 copies according to my statistics. That is an extremely high number, so I assumed that it was some error in my Mint installation (realtime JavaScript-based statistics). Especially since the downloads were concentrated to a few hours during yesterday and a few hours today, with normal numbers between these peaks. It didn't look very normal when it first happened yesterday, and since my regular pageviews were all normal I just deleted the numbers to keep my stats correct.

But when it happened today again, I decided to check my second statistic script, AWStats, which is based on server logs and updated once every day. And to my surprise it showed the same pattern: a whole lot of downloads during a few hours of yesterday, but a normal number of pageviews. And the bandwidth usage was many times higher than normal, so the files were actually downloaded from the server. But I still suspected that it was some kind of error because of the strange pattern. I just couldn't believe that these were real downloads, the numbers are just too high for that. I mean, 25.000 downloads in a few hours? No way…

To confirm that this were not real downloads, I headed over to the SiteScore test to make sure that the number of incoming links to my site was still the same. But it wasn't. Over these two days, the number of incoming links has grown from 98.000 to 114.000. That's 16.000 new sites in two days, which is more than I have ever seen in such a short time before.

I have no idea what is going on, so I need to ask all of you visitors. What is happening here? Has some large site hotlinked my andreas01 template during five hours yesterday and six hours today? The templates are being downloaded and new incoming links appear, so this is for real. But where, how and why? Any hint, from anyone who knows anything would be very welcome.
