One week of changes

27 April, 2007 (04:05) | General, Music, Site news | By: Andreas

I have finally initiated the big "reboot week" project that I have failed to get through for way too long now. It will affect a lot of different things in my life, but the most obvious change for people who read this will be the new design and a new structure on my website. I've been waiting for the perfect time to get it all done, to get some new releases out and to launch the new design. That perfect time is here soon, in a few days to be a bit more exact.

To be honest, I have had possibilities to do this major update for months, but I haven't had enough inspiration and motivation to go through the big refreshment process that is needed. I apologize for the long wait, and for not treating this site or you visitors better. I am the first person to say that it is a shame. But I am also the only person who can do something about it. And since you have had patience and helped me when I have needed it, it is time for me to give something back again.

Next week there will be a number of exciting things happening where the reboot will fit in well, so things will really start to happen now. More about the exciting next week later, but for now I need to issue the regular "chaos ahead!" warning:

If this site would look strange at times during the weekend and the beginning of next week, don't worry about it! I will re-build the site live on place, so things will probably look broken at some points. But I will be aware of it and it will only be temporary, so please wait a while before telling me that my site contains errors. Much of the content will be removed temporarily and reorganized, so don't be surprised if some pages disappear or appear to be empty during the next couple of days. Originally, I wanted to prepare the entire update in advance and just press a button to make all changes appear simultaneously. But that hasn't worked very well, so I'm going to make all changes live on the site instead. It is not any pretty way to update a site, but I believe that the result will be good at the end anyway!

Get the music before it disappears!

One of the more significant changes will be a complete update of the music section. It has been a work-in-progress section of the site since this it was launched back in October 2005, and it is still missing huge parts of the content that was supposed to be added. Now I am planning to organize the music in a completely different way and add more content related to my music career. And with this update coming up soon, I need to make another warning:

I can not promise that all songs will be available after this update. I will probably remove a number of songs for different reasons, mainly because there are several songs that I really don't like myself. As it is right now, I have tried to upload as many of the old songs as possible, hoping to have a complete music collection online at some point. But from now on, I will change the direction a bit and try to build a really good selection, putting the focus on the good songs and on related content - and leaving the not-so-good parts of the music career to the past.

Why do this? The answer is simple. If someone visits the music archive and downloads only one song, I want it to be a good one. Thousands of songs are downloaded from my music section every day, and a significant part of those downloads are songs that I am not very happy with today. I would feel better if all songs that were downloaded were songs that I am proud to have created, that would be an amazing feeling. And for you as a site visitor it means less free music to download - but you can be sure that the songs you download are worth the effort since the overall quality will be much better.

If you want to make sure that you have the complete collection of music including the old, boring and outdated songs, you need to download the songs before I take them down (which I will do in a day or two). The music can be downloaded as free MP3 songs (no DRM, no fees, no registrations, no limitations) directly from these pages:

The songs that are left on the site will of course remain free, as always. In addition to having them online here, I will also place them on a couple of different music sites that will allow me to offer streaming plays, on-site MP3 players and many other features that I will write more about later.

What do you think?

Selecting which songs to remove will not be all that easy. I could make a quick list of songs that I don't want to keep, but of course I will listen to feedback from you as well. Which songs are your favorites? Which ones are really bad? Feel free to share your opinions, either by posting a comment or by sending an e-mail. All feedback counts, and I appreciate all the comments I get. Feel free to nominate songs for removal, and please be honest. And of course, feel free to comment on the bonus songs mentioned above!

Instead of removing songs you don't like, you could re-organise the songs either by download count, so your users control which songs are on top (like your very own chart), or you give them each a rating, grouping the ones you like at the top. Either way, it will be good to see your new design here, and hopefully this one will be released as wordpress theme and XHTML template.

I really like the current design of your site, but good luck with the re-building anyway! :)

If this is any help, here are my favorite songs from your collection:

Lagoona - Into my dream
Core Meltdown
She
When I Saw You.

Keep the good work!

I don't think you should remove any songs Andreas.

Just because there is a song you personally don't like anymore, maybe one of your readers do…

In the end, it's your site and music but everyone has different tastes in music and we are all our own worst critic, so don't be to hard on yourself.

In other news, I look forward to your reboot… but honestly you've been teasing about it for so long now, I'll believe it when I see it :)

Keep up the good work.

Trying to change your site (network, database etc) without getting downtime is a challenge. Good planning and rollback plans help, but some luck may be needed as well. Good luck!

As for the music, it's really great that you're providing it like this. I also agree that ordering by popularity in some way is a great idea, especially for someone that just wants to see what it's all about.

I like here this: "The hidden "live" folder". Now I have updated the collection of music and have added this.

Gnome: I am still not entirely sure how to display the music on my site in the future. I will probably need to try a few different options to find the right one. Your suggestions are good, both an own chart and ratings could work well for sorting and displaying the songs on the site. I may also use features from external music sites like iSOUND or PureVolume.com, once I learn more about how those sites work.

Nev: Thanks! None of those songs will be removed. Most songs that I am considering to remove are old tracks, several from the time period as "When I saw you" (around 1997). "Mr. Doubt", "Forever" and "Relaxing" are three songs that I have never really liked myself, just to give an example.

Sean: That is why I have had all the songs online until now. And yes, even the songs I don't like have generated good feedback. Only a few days ago, I got an e-mail saying that "Forever" was the favorite song for a website visitor and music listener, and a comment like that is just amazing to get. But it is also very obvious to me that the older songs are not as popular as the newer ones, and that most feedback is about the newer songs that keep a higher quality than the ollder tracks.

Johan: I am not any well-organized person, and this site is a big mess. I wish I could be smart and make up a structured plan for the update, but I have serious problems with finding the energy needed to follow such a plan if I make one. I usually end up using the energy on letting my creativity free instead, hoping that it will turn out in a good way in the end!

The free songs and the website templates are all the result of that way of working. Unfortunately, the lack of updates and new releases in the last couple of months is also the result of that, as I've not had the inspiration needed to do all the things I have wanted to do. Will it work this time? We'll see! :)

Design: Sorry for the terrible quality in some of those recordings. They were not made to be released anyway, just to get an idea of how the music worked in live and semi-live versions. But the live version of "Andact" is well worth downloading for anyone who likes the original. I play the Lagoona Virus Indigo synth live on stage on that song, which was recorded in March 2005 on the last live performance I did before taking a break from the music…

I think that you better to make another special section for the other tracks you don't like. (others or misc.)
Don't you?
Personnally, I like all of them and I know that a big big bunch of people had never listened to it. So please, for the Universal Love of Music, please, let them be… ;-) thanks!

If you feel that you need to not offer some older songs for solitary download, you could put all the songs in one big zip file for those who (like me) want every song a good artist has ever made, and who find it somewhat tedious to download each song individually anyways.

Good luck with your reboot. It will probably inspire me to give my own site a decent design.

Reiki Usui Defender: See the answer to Gnome below!

Gnome: Yes, I have actually decided to do that! All songs will still be available, but a number of the older songs that I don't like myself will not be featured in the same way as the rest of the music. They will not be included in the on-site music player of featured as streamable files with lots of song information, but they will be available for download as single files (like they are today) or as a part of a big "complete collection" archive.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I hope this solution will make you all happy! :)

So I guess the design changes were left for now or you were too busy? To be honest I am anxious to see what you will come up with :)

a good idea a compact expenditure of your music would be to be made. I will donate something also immediately ;-)))

"reboot week" looks like this isn't going to happen again.

Comment from Andreas

greg: Yes, it is. :) It has been a great week, even though you can't see any changes on the site yet. I have negotiated deals for the distributing the music in new ways, discussed new features and wild ideas with several of you who post comments here every now and then, discussed adding template reviews with two other designers and prepared for the release of this design as both a template and a highly requested WordPress theme.

I have also asked a couple of friends to betatest the new templates for me, so I have something good to release once I switch to the new design. And among the new ideas that I've added to the plan, you will be able to download variations of the templates and the themes. For example, lots of people have asked for a wide (980px) version of the andreas01 templates, and it will be added as a variation of the original design.

Believe it or not, I know I have broken promises about updates before. But keep these words in mind before you abandon the site for good. ;)

Thanks for the songs :)

Please do not remove anything, I don't think it's a good idea. Maybe some kind of ratings would do?

I would would like that have left all, music takes a place, but at all different tastes. To whom that is pleasant one, to another another, but it is pleasant to all and it would be necessary that could listen to all, that is pleasant to them, especially at you good music.
