Sponsoring software?

19 April, 2006 (00:07) | General, Webdesign | By: Andreas

Before the series of updates that I'm working on right now, I want to publish a request. I have no idea if it is a good idea or a bad idea, but I have got several generous donations and many great offers each time I have written about the various problems I have had with the hosting of my site so I figure that it is atleast worth a try. The subject for the request is software, and what I am looking for is some kind of sponsoring deal that would allow me to get fresh licenses of the programs that I want to use in my work.

For the everyday HTML coding work I use Notepad++, which is the best freeware editor that I have found (and I have tried a lot of editors). And I write my CSS in both Notepad++ and in a specialized commercial CSS editor which I found a few weeks ago and completely fell in love with: Style Master. I will write more about Style Master later on, it is a great tool. So I have the programs I want for the coding work…

But for both the graphics design and the music production projects I'm stuck with various programs that are non-expensive and useful - but with I don't feel very comfortable with. For example, I have a full license of the tracker-like music production tool Renoise, which is a great piece of software. But it doesn't give me the inspiration flow that I get from the "complete studio package"-kind of programs that I would rather want to use. I know exactly what software I want, but the price tag climbs up to over $1.500 for the programs and I haven't got any chance to afford that. The result is that I can't release any new music or any graphics design material, and things that are often requested (such as the .PSD versions of the template graphics) can't be published on this site.

So now I'm all open for suggestions and ideas. The ideal solution would be to have two sponsors, one related to graphics design and one related to music production, that I could advertise on this site and in other ways (in interviews, at events, in relation to the products I produce with the sponsored software and so on). Anyone who would be interested in helping me out will of course get my full support in return. I don't know if that promise is worth anything, but I will do my best to make it worth it. Anyone interested in becoming an official sponsor should send me an e-mail and let me know what part you would be interested in helping me with - and what you would expect in return. I'll write a follow-up post as soon as I know if this will work or not.

In other news, andreas00 has been downloaded more than 1.000 times already, before it has even been sent to the large template sites. I'm really curious to see how it will be recieved on OpenWebDesign and OSWD! I will probably upload it tomorrow, so it should be online on the sites in a week or two.

Good luck with the software sponsoring! I'm just starting out with music production, and I feel your pain ;)

Just curious, what software are you looking at?

you could try out th GIMP for Graphic design. I use it all the time, for everything. It has all th power of commercial applications, but it is a bit hard to learn. I have no idea for sponsors, but there is my two cents. also, a program called Image Enhance I have is very useful.

Jason: Thanks! It is a good suggestion, but I have tried GIMP many times. It is a great tool, but I don't feel comfortable working with it - probably because I don't know it good enough. But when it comes to the kind of work I do I would still prefer one of the expensive commercial software suites - the one I know well (and know that I will get good results with). But the initial cost is insane…
