Jokkmokks Marknad 2007

2 February, 2007 (11:44) | Jokkmokk | By: Andreas

The annual winter market here in Jokkmokk is now open. It means that this small town grows into a big meeting place for tens of thousands of people for a few days. The market, which has 402 years of official history, is the largest event in the local area and always a fantastic experience. In the last couple of years I have been involved in the event in different ways, performing live music on the different dance events and hosting art exhibitions from my music studio (which was located in the middle of the market area). But since I have moved out of the studio, I have avoided taking on any work for this market. I will be there as a regular visitor for the first time in five years, and I'm really looking forward to that!

Until I get a chance to post some photos, feel free to take a look at these images from the local newspaper. The texts are in Swedish, but you can still see browse through images. All of this happens right outside my window. A longer report will be posted tomorrow!

Andreas, thank you for sharing this event! I truly enjoy cultural heritage around the world, and would not have known about this, unless I pulled your feed every day. Jokkmokk looks like a wonderful place to live, and I hope to visit some day.

Warm Regards (it looks a little brisk in winter ;) )

I didn't get any chance to walk around the market today, I've spent all day finishing web projects, so I didn't get any own photos of the market this year. Sad but true…

But I got around all parts of the market area yesterday, when I was out twice. Most things are the same from year to year, and since I have been around for the last 15 markets or so there were no big surprises. It is not easy to find a person in that big crowd anyway, I've tried that a few times and the results have not always been good. You didn't happen to see some guy walking around Bio Norden with a small black and white papillon dog? ;)

When did you send your e-mail? I get much more e-mail than I can possibly reply to, but I still read all e-mails that I get so I should honstly know which e-mail you refer to.

The temperature is usually around -20c, sometimes down to -30c. It was nice to see a winter market with nice weather, but many of the visitors missed the "arctic cold" that they expected!

Hi Andreas, sent it a while ago, I'll try again as it might interest you.

I live about 300km south of you in a very small village and at the moment it's -1.6 so it's almost as if summer is coming ;-)

Cheers

Thanks for the links to the pictures of the Marknad winter market. You are definitely doing your bit to publicise JokkMokk to the world. The tourist information people should give you a commission!
