Good-bye to the studio

10 May, 2006 (00:01) | Music, Personal | By: Andreas

Since I started building the first generation of the Lagoona studio together with Björn in 1997, I have always had some place where I've been able to write music. Over the years the studio has been located several different places. Sometimes at Björns place, sometimes in my apartment and sometimes we had it split into two smaller studios. When Lagoona was put to rest a few years ago, the studio was already split up. I decided to give professional music production a shot, and when I found a great office location in Jokkmokk (I lived in a nearby town named Porjus at the time), I moved all my studio gear into something that became a really nice workplace.

Baygroove Studios - Production roomI used the studio for one and a half year and ran a very exciting project called Baygroove.com - which is however completely dead today. Some of you may remember it, others have already forgotten about it. While I did a number of interesting production projects under the Baygroove flag, it didn't leave any big mark in the history. I made a few compilation releases, produced a number of remixes for other artists, made a number of live performances and DJ gigs - and pissed off the Swedish music industry by claiming that filesharing wasn't just legal but also the very best way to promote music on the internet.

Baygroove Studios - Relax roomI appeared on national TV and radio and got a good response on some crazy concepts I created (such as a "pay if you want to" online music store), but the whole project took extremely much energy and lacked funding. I had to give it up after a year, because I never got any chance of writing any music for myself. I simply couldn't afford it. Making music became a duty rather than something I did out of pure creativity, and the whole project lost its fun. And it was a one-man project, I would have needed another producer to work with since I couldn't deliver as much music as I was asked for. I tried, but it was like running into a wall, over and over again.

My way of getting something else on my mind was to design websites and website templates, and when I decided to release one of them (called "andreas01") in July 2005, I got pushed into a new adventure which was a whole lot funnier! I decided to take a break from the music, and work as a professional web designer for a while. I had a good record deal with a large European label waiting for my signature, but after careful consideration I decided to step back. I would never have made it through that deal (which covered 3+3 years) as I didn't have the motivation needed to work on that level. And today, almost a year later, I have no regrets about that decision. I'm still working with web design and it is still incredibly fun. And I do write some music every now and then, although it is just for fun. Professional music production will have to wait for now, but I may possibly pick it up in the future if I get the inspiration and motivation back.

Baygroove Studios - Moving out...

This week I will move out my last stuff from the studio to allow someone else to use it. For the last couple of months, I have only used it to work on a book project together with my father, and I haven't been there very often. I do most web design work at home, and it works great for me. While it feels good to finally leave the last leftovers of the Baygroove project behind, I will really miss the studio. I have spent many days (and nights) in it and I have some amazing memories from the place, so I do feel a bit sad about saying good-bye to it. But deep inside, I know that it opens up for new adventures. And I can't wait to see what is coming up next…

You get sunshine up there? I thought Northern Sweden was kinda dark and moody

To all Swedes, please don't flame me.

Well, the winters are really dark. In December the sun doesn't reach above the horizon at all, so the daylight is weak and only lasts for a few hours (around 10am-2pm). But in the summer (June/July), we have more light than you could imagine since the midnight sun gives us sunny nights for several weeks. Northern Sweden is a land of strong contrasts. But I love it.

By the way, I'm experimenting with putting AdSense ads back on the site. Don't worry about the fact that it looks terrible, it is just a test and it will be removed tomorrow.

Wow. That was a very deep and emotional post and it brought back a lot of memories for me when I was in a band doing the music thing.

Like you, I haven't done anything in the professional sense of music in many years but I still pick up my guitar from time to time and jam a little.

As the saying goes, through good times and bad times, we'll always have our memories.

I wish you luck with all your future adventures but don't ever give up on music. It's a great outlet, just like web designing.

Web design being an art form, its cool to see that so many artists have experimented in other outlets. I think many of us web designers could recall some sort of musical past. I, thankfully, am still steadily involved in music and love it. Its also not for gain so there is no pressure and I can just enjoy it.

Thanks for filling us in though, Andreas. I'm glad you're doing web design now.

I bet its cold up there, I'm sitting on hot and wet climate - Malaysia. From morning till noon its bright sunny shine, just before the sun start sinking here comes the big fat rain. Everyone duck for cover.
I guess that reflects life, just do what ever you want while you still have time, well keep up the good work pal.

I can understand your feeling. I'm also making music and it's always fun in the studio with my friend. But we are with 2, otherwise it's really hard and expensive. We are working on a professional level now so we can deliver a finished product. It's possible because we work with another studio for mastering or tracks and recording our vocals. We didn't release any songs yet because it's a hard business.
But you don't have a studio anymore but you do own a little bit of our studio because our website is made with your wordpress template ;)
So keep up the good work any I hope maybe one day you will restart making music.
Greetings from belgium,

I still own a lot of gear, but I don't have any space for setting it up for production right now. But I do have a cute little machine (Novation K-station) connected to my computer at all times, just in case I get some wild idea. If I could find a sponsor so I could buy a licence of the all-in-one music production software I want to use, I would still be able to make music every now and then… =)
