$5.000 WordPress theme scholarship

27 July, 2007 (00:10) | Themes, Webdesign, WordPress | By: Andreas

Are you a US citizen and currently attending a full time post-secondary education? Do you build WordPress themes? Then you should read this entry carefully for a chance to win a $5.000 scholarship from CollegeScholarships.org!

College Scholarships are launching a new WordPress-based site called New Scholarships and the site needs a new and fresh design. In order to get that, a web design contest is launched where participants can create and submit entries - which need to be in the form of complete WordPress themes. A number of well-known web design profiles (including Paul Stamatiou, Steve Smith, Darius A Monsef IV, Bryan Veloso, Darren Rowse, Jonathan Snook and me!) will review the entries and find the best entry. The winner will recieve a $5.000 scholarship from The Daniel Kovach Scholarship Foundation!

The deadline for submissions is very close: August 13th (midnight PST), and there is currently not many entries so this is really a good challenge for those of you who can take it on! Besides the chance of winning a scholarship, you will get your work reviewed by people who truly know the art of web design…

Entries are submitted via the form on the the scholarship site . If you have any questions, there is more information and contact information on that site as well. Since I am one of the judges, I can't answer any questions or give any recommendations. But the directions are clear: Make a good theme for the new scholarship site, and hope for the best. Good luck!

Please spread the word!

I'm sad that it's only for US citizens.

I agree. But it is still a great opportunity for those who can participate!

I think it's great idea but I think they want to promote the collegeScholarships website to guys who know how to design and think about education. But its also great opportunity for designers.

Andreas, you folks (other judges) should try to arrange something for maybe the second and third place finishers. Maybe some sort of publicity of the themes that they design so they receive something besides cold hard cash.

It's going to be a hard decision for you to take.
Good luck to all participants!

I think its a great chance for someone who really wants to work in this business and also to get some experience with working in it. To have one's foot in the door as well as this skilled support is a really good way to learn how to work in this branch. So good luck.

Not so happy that the scope of the contest is geographically limited but still, the program is good and worthy of praise.

Once again, I wish it would have been a contest open for everybody. And I wish there would have been more prizes to win. But that is not the case since this is a US college scholarship contest.

But I still support the contest despite those limitations, because it is not often we see a theme design contest with such a great prize and such a great list of judges. I wish I could have participated, if only to get one of my designs judged by Brian Veloso or Jonathan Snook! I've learned so much from them, and of course from many of the other judges as well, like Steve (orderedlist) and Darren (problogger). It would be a shame if the contest didn't get a number of good entries…

Cool! I am in, you will see my entry winning hehe.
Thanks for letting me know, I promess that if I win you will get a percentage as donation

Comment from Andreas

As a judge, I can of course not accept a donation like that. The rules say "No bribes", haha. :) But good luck, anyone who enters has a big chance of winning! And of course, entries made with valid, optimized and accessibible code will have a larger chance than traditional table-based layouts with 200 validation errors. :)

Wow, that sounds as it would be a great chance for someone to start in this business. Is this a unique scholarship? Well, I wish all the participants good luck.

It looks like a very nice linkbait… And 5.000 $ isn't so much.

That sure is one of the most unsusal ways to get a scolarship. But thinking about it, it ist probably more long term oriented and usefull than some sports scholarship. Just my 2 Cents. Rergards from Vienna / Austria, Sandra

Bimbo Boy: Jag vet.

Simon: It is more than I would ask for if I would build a custom theme, and it is more than any other WordPress theme competition I have ever seen before. I can't say if it is a truly good idea or not, and anyone who has followed my blog knows that I am not a fan of web design contests. But I'm supporting anyway, and I hope that more people are encouraged to organize (and sponsor) similar contests which can be open for everyone.

For more than a yeat, I've been planning to launch a template design contest with 24 prizes in 4 categories (The Template Awards), but I didn't get anywhere with the idea. Perhaps this contest will provide the inspiration that I need to launch something bigger? Or the inspiration to get someone else to do something similar?

Thats really cool. $5000 is much money and the template creator also will get really popular. I think I will start to create a new template now..

There are designers outside US who can win by miles. A better option could be $5000 in cash that will invite more entries.
