New template: 1024px

New template: 1024px by Andreas Viklund (click to download!)

It has been several months since I released my last free website template, and I have waited with releasing new templates to let things calm down a bit. Andreas01-09 has been downloaded by a whole lot of people which is nice - but it almost became too much fun. Anyway, I'm ready to release a few more templates now. The first one comes today, and it is called 1024px for pretty obvious reasons. 1024px is a simple but effective fixed-width layout with two columns and two different variations (sidebar to the left or to the right). The content is placed first in the source no matter where the sidebar is positioned, and I have added some basic accessibility features. With some small changes in the CSS, it is really easy to change this theme so it works with 800px too. It is also easy to turn it into a flexible-width design. Feel free to experiment and change it as much as you want to!

Please note that this is an XHTML/CSS template. Not a theme for WordPress or any other CMS or blog engine. You will not be able to load this template in WordPress. However, there will probably be theme versions created soon, and once that happens I will post the links to the theme versions here. Anyone who wants to build a theme should contact me first to make sure that noone else has started working on the same thing already.

Demos will come once I have uploaded the template to OWD and OSWD.org. Until then, you'll have to download the template to try it out. Comments and bug reports are of course very welcome.

Comments can be only posted for 14 days after the post date. If you have comments about an older post such as this one, feel free to send me an e-mail!

Andreas –

What I have of the Drupal theme of this one is up at http://articulation.uni.cc . The only thing I can definitely see it needing is better comments styling, but I'm not sure what to do. . .

Aaron: It looks nice! But I see that the h1 title is a bit hard to read, so I am adjusting its letter-spacing from -8px to -5 to make regular text easier to read. Let me know when a public version is out, and I'll add the link to it to this entry.

Well. . .I can't say it is the best ever, but I figure 'tis good enough. http://articulation.uni.cc/node/34 is the page for the theme port.

(Very simple port, but I tend to do that with my ports, and let the individual downloading it add features if he/she choses)

[...] You didn't ask for it, but I have a feeling that the request would come pretty soon so I went a few steps ahead and re-coded 1024px into a version for smaller screens. The name? 800px of course! It works exactly the same, with one minor difference: It has no background image. Other than that, what differs is the width. 800px can be downloaded from the templates page. [...]

Now that would make a nice WP theme - are you going to do a version for wordpress?

Ainslie: No, I'm not. I'm hoping for someone else to do it. Want to take on the project?

Hello. I'm learning a lot from your templates. Thank you! You say that it is easy to change your "1024" design from fixed to flexible width. Can you give me any clues? I actually wanted to change your "Andreas 1" template to be flexible, but could also adapt the simple 1024…

Nina: A fluid version of 1024px has been made already. I'll add it soon. I get a lot of requests for a fluid version of andreas01 so I may possibly add that too. However, it is more work to make andreas01 fluid than to make 1024px fluid.
