WordPress plugin search

I have spent some time searching for a WordPress plugin that allows the blog owner to create specific capabilities for the registered users. The most important capability would be to restrict the editing capabilities to pre-defined pages and categories. What I'm trying to do is to create a multi-user blog where each user has an own page (with own sub-pages) and an own category - and users can only edit their own area of the blog.
Is there any plugin out there that makes this possible, or any tutorial that could help me learn how to do this myself? If not, I would be very interested in hiring someone to build this. If anyone have any good ideas, please let me know!

That is a good idea for future projects, but that is not an option this time. I need a plugin or a manual hack, and if it is not possible to do the site will not get the feature at all. This is for an established site where the owner wants single users to have full control of their own categories - and not anyone elses categories. It is not supposed to be multiple blogs, just multiple users for one blog.

Wonder if not it would be simpler to use wiki that you show in a page.

As far as I know, this isn't possible, looked into a bit myself. Though you might want to ask on the WP Hackers mailing list. Another thing you might want to consider is using multiple blogs that appear to be one (you don't need WPMU or fancy code to set up multiple blogs, just ad 2-3 lines in wp-config.php. something like this)

B2Evolution could do a really cool multiuser-blog, but B2 does have some severe drawbacks in other departments. It's very good at multiuser, but lacks a lot of the neater aspects of Wordpress (such as widgets) and is one hell of a thing to maintain once you have a shitload of hacks in it (which is inevitable if you want anything to get done).
And on another note, I'm still searching for a way to NOT send pingbacks when you link your own previous entries. If anyone has any clue how to do this, let me know!

The Lyceum Project
Developed by ibiblio.org, Lyceum is a stand-alone mutli-user blogging application, designed for the enterprise. Utilizing the fantastic, intuitive WordPress blogging engine at its core, Lyceum enables stand-alone, multi-user blog services for small and high-volume environments. Lyceum is GPL-licensed, under active development, and free to use.

Ananth: Thanks, I will check out Lyceum, it may be interesting if it can be applied to an existing site. Are you one of the developers, or a user?

Serendipity has this functionality built into the core code, it is a true multi-user blog engine. Further developments are also continuing on multi-user functions but everything you ask for is already possible with Serendipity and Wordpress templates can be ported quite easily. Let me know if you would like any help.

Carl: I know several open source CMS packages that can do this. Serendipity is one of them, and that makes it interesting if I would build something like this from scratch in the future. But what I need now is a solution for this for WordPress - if such a solution would exist or be possible to build. The client is not interested in switching CMS only to get this extra feature, as it would mean much more work than value.

Owen Winkler has a WP plugin called Role Manager which might be just what you're looking for, or at very least would be a good starting point. Apparently he experienced some website troubles, but there are copies of it floating around, and I could send it to you if you like.

Dave: I use Role Manager, it is a great tool. But I have not managed to create a capability that makes it possible to specify which pages a user can edit…

ztml is designed to do that, allowing the users to have their own personal pages, which is much like what you're looking for. If you're interested in using it I'm more than happy to help you to set it up.

Hey Andreas,
I know you're looking for a Wordpress plugin, but what you're describing sounds exactly like how Drupal is set up. You might want to look into it, it's pretty simple to set up, and easy to learn how to use.
