WordPress theme news: Updates coming up

27 May, 2008 (01:36) | Webdesign, WordPress | By: Andreas

It is a shame that I haven't updated my WordPress themes to include the new features in recent WordPress versions, it should have been done long ago! Anyway, I have finally got myself together and started rewriting the themes and adding missing features. The first theme to be updated will be the 1024px theme in which I have added support for the WordPress tag system (including a sidebar tag cloud by default), category descriptions on category archive pages, gravatars in the comments and general improvements based on recent updates of the original 1024px website template which the theme design is based on.

There are still a few details left to add, like the alternative style for moving the sidebar to the right side and the classic 800px modification that will make it possible to scale down the theme width so it works with lower screen widths. I may also include the alternative 1024px inverted style made by Jason Cole, and I need to learn more about the new shortcode feature and make sure that it works with the theme. And finally, I will make sure to rename the theme and make changes to the way i handle version numbers, in order to avoid the common mixups and misunderstandings that occur between the original website templates and the theme versions that share the same designs. I have a plan for that, which i will write more about later…

It will take a couple of days to get the last changes added since this is a very busy week for me. But if anyone would want to try the theme as it is right now, then you are very welcome to download the 1024px WordPress theme in its current shape. If you do, please report any errors or bugs you find and any feature you miss, and I will make sure to fix it for the final release. Since the official theme viewer isn't working at all right now, I will host my themes on my own WordPress themes page, on their own single theme pages similar to the single template pages that I added to the templates section recently.

Here is a screenshot of the updated 1024px theme showing the added tag cloud, the post tags and the moved comments link. Click on it to download the theme:

I think it's one of your best themes at all, for its clearness and simplicity.
Anyway it would be very good if you add the possibility to include an header image.

Good idea, I will make sure to do that. Perhaps something like the solution that Johanna and I built for the local dog club, which was based on a copy of the 1024px theme. Would that work?

Yes, that's exactly what I was meaning.
But you could also keep the space for the blog title and the short description.

Just a thought, but why separate the xHTML templates and Wordpress templates? Your new one page format for the xHTML templates should easily allow you to include download links for the likes of xHTML, MODx, Wordpress, and any other conversions of the templates.

I would think keeping them separated would create more work for yourself granted you do have some WP only templates so it wouldn't be an entirely fair match up, but I would think back porting those to xHTML would be somewhat easy.

Anyways sorry if I don't make any sense. Keep up the Good Work!

AMDbuilder: That is a good point. The reason for keeping them separated has been that the WordPress themes have been hosted on the official theme viewer for years - and I have also wanted to make it perfectly clear that the website templates will never work with any CMS by default since they contain no CMS-specific code at all. It has made sense so far, so I have sticked to keeping them separate. But starting soon I will host the updated WP-themes on my own site, and that gives the opportunity to make such changes.

In the future, I will probably continue to keep WordPress themes and website templates separated, but I will add links to ported versions on the single template pages to make it easy to find CMS-specific versions for each template. I will also re-organize the versioning and naming systems for my own ports to make it a bit more logical and less confusing. And yes, I will release template versions of the original WordPress themes - the Daleri Selection-based "Daleri Template" has been ready for release for a long time now. I better get it online now!
