New theme for WordPress: Lagom 1.0

After a long wait in the review queue, the Lagom theme for WordPress has now been approved and published in the official WordPress theme directory. It was made available three days ago, and it has already been downloaded more than 900 times. If you are looking for a classic 2-column blog layout, give it a try and post your feedback here.

The Grid version 2.0 released

The Grid template has got a lot of positive feedback since its release in the beginning of September. It was the most downloaded template on this site during last month, and since I learned a lot from creating it I wanted to continue working with it to learn even more.

Today I am releasing a new version of The Grid: version 2.0. It has a number of significant updates and additions, including a second and wider (1200px) grid system which can be applied by adding class=”wider” to the HTML body tag, a number of text styles and two new examples of how to arrange navigation menus with The Grid. Rather than replacing the original version with this new one, I am publishing it as a template of its own. With the new features, I have used more code and made more advanced examples than the first version of the template had – so the original version may be easier to use for web design beginners and for those who prefer to keep things as simple as possible.

Check out the live demo of The Grid v2.0 or download the template directly: the-grid-v2.zip (164 Kb).

Source images (in Adobe Photoshop .PSD format) for the background and header images are available here: the-grid-psd.zip (564 Kb).

Header image pack for the Asokay theme

Header image pack for the Asokay WordPress theme

Here is a package of nine header images, styled and fitted for use with the Asokay theme for WordPress. They were made from photographs that I have taken myself, scaled down to 940×240 pixels and made into black and white. In some case with some filters and visual effects added.

The images cover a wide range of topics. For example, there are scenery photos (including a cityscape, a crowded street and a distant mountain as seen from a frozen lake with snowmobile tracks on it), macro photos, a puppy photo, a notebook photo with a handwritten diagram and a photo showing a brick wall in a Stockholm metro station. The images are free to use and modify in any way you find suitable, so if you find any of the images useful in your own design work you can use it as long as you give proper attribution.

To download this image set, click the screenshot to the right. The files are packed into a .zip archive (download size: 460 Kb). To use an image from this set, unzip the images to a folder on your local computer and use the header image uploader on the “Header” page (under “Appearance”) in the administration area of your WordPress website.

Design contest: Win a Chromebook!

It is time to launch the first contest on andreasviklund.com, and it is of course a web design contest. The challenge is to design either a HTML/CSS template or a WordPress theme for the andreasviklund.com CSS template gallery or WordPress themes archive.

The contest runs until October 30th, after which I will review the entries together with a small team of other designers and developers to find the winners. The results will be published on andreasviklund.com in the beginning of November.

Prizes:

1st prize: A Samsung Series 5 Chromebook + 1 year of free hosting from Svenska Domäner AB (a Linux Business package).
2nd and 3rd prizes: 1 year of free hosting from Svenska Domäner AB (also Linux Business packages).

If you don’t want to enter the design contest but still want a chance to win a prize, then post a link to this blog entry from your site. I will write the URLs of the five sites which send the most visitors on small papers, put the papers in a bowl, close my eyes and draw one winner which will also win a 1-year hosting package.

Rules and terms:

  • Max 2 entries per person. Entering the same design both as a WordPress theme and as a CSS template is OK.
  • Entries must use standards-compliant HTML/CSS and be original work. Designs and themes which have already been released elsewhere can not enter the contest.
  • The entries must be public domain or use a licence which allows me to publish and distribute them on andreasviklund.com (of course with proper credits given).
  • The winners will be selected based on code quality, visual appearance, design features and overall impression – in line with the ILEVA philosophy. Simple, well-coded, accessible and easy-to-use entries will be preferred.
  • Entries can be either a CSS template or a theme for WordPress. No difference will be made between the two categories when selecting winners.
  • Frameworks (like the Toolbox theme for WordPress or a CSS grid system) can be used as starting points, as long as credit is given and their license allows re-distribution.
  • By submitting an entry, you approve that your design may be published on (and distributed by) andreasviklund.com. Again, of course with proper credits to the original designer.

If needed, I will update this page with clarifications and additions to the terms. If you have any question or comment, post a comment or write me an e-mail.

How to enter:

To enter the competition, e-mail your entry before the last day of October in a .zip file to inbox@andreasviklund.com with “andreasviklund.com design contest” as the subject line. Include a short description of yourself and your design, and your postal address (for knowing where to send the first prize should you win it). You will get a reply from me within 24 hours, confirming that I have recieved your entry and that it has been entered into the contest.

Final words:

The purpose of this contest is to bring in fresh ideas and new influences into the template and theme galleries of andreasviklund.com. It is an effort to provide more variation in terms of design, while still keeping the code quality high and the skills required to use the material on a level where as many users as possible can find it useful. I am hoping that I will be able to present the work of several talented designers once the contest is over, and I am sure that the entries will end up being used by site owners and bloggers all over the world.

Designers, I’m hoping to hear from you soon! Good luck!

New template: The Grid

A new template has been added to the website template page: The Grid. It is the first template I release which is using a grid layout system, and it provides a lot of freedom for template users to create advanced multi-column layouts. As always, I have kept the code as short and simple as possible to make it easy to work with. Four layout examples have been included to give you an idea about the flexibility of using a grid system. More layout examples and a tutorial about how the grid system works (and how you create the layout you want) will be published next week.

This is what The Grid template looks like. To download the template, click the screenshot below. To read more, see a live demo or screenshots of the different layout examples, go to the The Grid template page

In case anyone would want to modify the background or the sample header image that is included, here is a .zip containing the .PSD source files for both the header and the background images: the-grid-psd.zip (242 KB)
