Variant Multi, two alternate versions

The Variant Multi template got very positive feedback, but I got one e-mail about the fact that the narrow 600px layout wasn’t working very well on iOS devices – it appeared very narrow since the Safari Mobile viewport was not adjusted in the HTML. In order to provide a better option, I customized the template and added the viewport meta tag, as well as optimizing font sizes and margins to make it look better on mobile devices while keeping the different content area layout options. For testing I used my iPhone 4 and an iPod Touch (2nd generation).

I have released the customized template as an alternate version called Variant Multi (mobile). You can download it directly here: Variant Multi (mobile).zip. You can also see a live demo of the mobile version to see what it looks like before downloading.

Along with the mobile version, I also created an alternate version with a different colorscheme, background images (very lightweight, 6 kilobytes in total for the three added images) and text shadows. This version is simply called Variant Multi (alt) and it can be downloaded from here: Variant Multi (alt).zip.

New template: Variant Multi

A new template has been released, this time a multi-layout design which has been named Variant Multi. It offers a whole lot of different layout options, from simple one- or two-column layouts to magazine-style multi-column layouts. New template: Variant Stream

A new template has been published: Variant Stream. It is a blue-colored layout with two columns (left sidebar) and space for both a logo and a large header image. Basic blog post styles and two navigation menu options are among other features. An alternate version with an orange/brown colorscheme and the sidebar moved to the right side is also available.

New template: Variant Mobile

Variant Mobile template

A new template has been released: Variant Mobile. It was inspired by the positive feedback I have got for the previous single-column templates, along with a request I got for a darker template that would work well on small-screen devices. Beside the regular XHTML 1.0 Strict version, I also created a HTML5 version (available as a separate download) to learn more about the new and upcoming standard. Basic Reader template: Alternate and mobile editions added

The new Basic Reader template got good feedback, and generated a number of requests. One such request was to add support for dual content columns (like in Variant Duo) and another was to make a mobile-friendly single column version (like I did with Variant Pure).

Said and done, two alternate versions have been released. Download them directly here:

- basic-reader-mobile.zip – 1 column, no background image, adjusted for mobile devices, new horizontal navigation menu, footer added. The image to the right shows this version as it appears when viewed with an iPhone 4.

- basic-reader-alt.zip – 3 columns, new background image, footer added, new “timestamp” style added, post icons added. See the screenshot below:
