Sharing buttons and commenting using your Facebook, Twitter or Google account

I have spent this weekend on adding two new features for the site. Here is a short rundown:

Share buttons for pages and posts

Buttons for Google +1, Facebook Like and Tweet this have been added to all pages and all blog posts – as well as to the front page. If you click on one of the buttons (for example the "Facebook like" button) on any page or blog post, you will "like" that specific page or post (rather than the main URL, andreasviklund.com, which was shared on the previous version of the site). The sharing buttons now display the number of +1's, likes and tweets for each page, which is also a new feature.

Comment using your Facebook, Twitter or Google account

Comments can now be posted using your Facebook account, Google account or Twitter account, as well as by manually filling in the name and e-mail address like before. If you post a comment by connecting your Facebook account, your comment will also be posted on your Facebook wall along with a link to the post you are commenting on. I don't know if this will be useful to anyone, but I thought that it could be worth trying it out.

More features will be added during the next couple of weeks, as the site is in constant development now. If there is any specific feature that you would want to see, feel free to post your suggestions and requests here.

Design contest: Win a Chromebook!

It is time to launch the first contest on andreasviklund.com, and it is of course a web design contest. The challenge is to design either a HTML/CSS template or a WordPress theme for the andreasviklund.com CSS template gallery or WordPress themes archive.

The contest runs until October 30th, after which I will review the entries together with a small team of other designers and developers to find the winners. The results will be published on andreasviklund.com in the beginning of November.

Prizes:

1st prize: A Samsung Series 5 Chromebook + 1 year of free hosting from Svenska Domäner AB (a Linux Business package).
2nd and 3rd prizes: 1 year of free hosting from Svenska Domäner AB (also Linux Business packages).

If you don't want to enter the design contest but still want a chance to win a prize, then post a link to this blog entry from your site. I will write the URLs of the five sites which send the most visitors on small papers, put the papers in a bowl, close my eyes and draw one winner which will also win a 1-year hosting package.

Rules and terms:

  • Max 2 entries per person. Entering the same design both as a WordPress theme and as a CSS template is OK.
  • Entries must use standards-compliant HTML/CSS and be original work. Designs and themes which have already been released elsewhere can not enter the contest.
  • The entries must be public domain or use a licence which allows me to publish and distribute them on andreasviklund.com (of course with proper credits given).
  • The winners will be selected based on code quality, visual appearance, design features and overall impression – in line with the ILEVA philosophy. Simple, well-coded, accessible and easy-to-use entries will be preferred.
  • Entries can be either a CSS template or a theme for WordPress. No difference will be made between the two categories when selecting winners.
  • Frameworks (like the Toolbox theme for WordPress or a CSS grid system) can be used as starting points, as long as credit is given and their license allows re-distribution.
  • By submitting an entry, you approve that your design may be published on (and distributed by) andreasviklund.com. Again, of course with proper credits to the original designer.

If needed, I will update this page with clarifications and additions to the terms. If you have any question or comment, post a comment or write me an e-mail.

How to enter:

To enter the competition, e-mail your entry before the last day of October in a .zip file to inbox@andreasviklund.com with "andreasviklund.com design contest" as the subject line. Include a short description of yourself and your design, and your postal address (for knowing where to send the first prize should you win it). You will get a reply from me within 24 hours, confirming that I have recieved your entry and that it has been entered into the contest.

Final words:

The purpose of this contest is to bring in fresh ideas and new influences into the template and theme galleries of andreasviklund.com. It is an effort to provide more variation in terms of design, while still keeping the code quality high and the skills required to use the material on a level where as many users as possible can find it useful. I am hoping that I will be able to present the work of several talented designers once the contest is over, and I am sure that the entries will end up being used by site owners and bloggers all over the world.

Scam alert: Don't pay for text links on this site!

Every now and then, I am contacted by people who have found an offer to buy text link advertisements on andreasviklund.com. Most often, the offers are posted by anonymous people on various web forums such as DigitalPoint. Since andreasviklund.com has a high pagerank, text links from here are considered to be very valuable. When such links are offered for a low price it may seem like a fantastic deal for the buyer.

But it is not. Anyone claiming to sell text links on andreasviklund.com is commiting a fraud, and anyone who pays for such links will lose their money to a scammer without getting the link that they pay for.

Here are the simple facts:

1. There are no text link advertisement slots for sale on this website. Not sold by me, or by anyone else who claim to represent andreasviklund.com.
2. I do my very best to follow the Google webmaster guidelines, which means that text link advertisements for SEO purposes are simply not an option on this website.
3. If I would, for any reason, change the no-text-links policy, I would not need to advertise on external forums. And I would not need any link broker to speak for me. I get direct inquiries, offers and requests about text link ads every day in my e-mail – and I keep turning all such offers down.
4. Anyone who has paid a third part to get a link here, will end up with empty hands. I encourage anyone who becomes a victim of such a fraud to contact me so I can forward any information you may have regarding the seller to my legal representatives.
5. I am always open for discussions, suggestions and ideas regarding other forms of advertisements and partnerships. As long as it is all about advertising for traffic and not for SEO purposes.

Today on DigitalPoint…

Today, I was told about this forum thread where a person is claiming to sell pagerank 9 links on two sites where one is andreasviklund.com. I repeat: It is a scam, do NOT send any money to this person. But if you get any kind of information about the seller, please send it to me so I can take further action to put an end to this scam.

Lastly, if you see any similar offer on any other forum where you are a member, please post a link to this page to help others avoid getting scammed. Thanks in advance!

Google +1 button added

A new way of recommending andreasviklund.com to friends and online contacts has been added: The Google +1 button. You can find it in the sidebar on each page. If you have a Google account and you are signed in to it, you can click the +1 button to say "I recommend this!", similar to clicking the same +1 button in search results as explained in this video. I have also added the new "follow"-button for Twitter in the same space.

New forum launched!

After testing several forum solutions that were integrated with WordPress and the andreasviklund.com user database, I have come to the conclusion that none of the integrated forums worked as well as I hoped for. For that reason, I have moved the forum out of the main andreasviklund.com website and set up an external forum (based on Simple Machines Forum) on its own subdomain. By running an external forum, I can keep andreasviklund.com fast and efficient, while offering a much better user experience for all of you who are interested in discussing web design topics. I can also offer better support for template and theme users, and open up the forum for more topics than just support and discussions about the material on this site.

One of the main cons is that previous users on andreasviklund.com will need to re-register to join the discussions and post own threads. Users on andreasviklund.com will get an e-mail with an invitation to join this forum, and suggestions for specific boards and features are very welcome. Let me know what you would want to see here, and I will be happy to add it.
