New theme: Asokay for WordPress

Post 112 of 262

For the last two weeks, I have been working on a new WordPress theme that has been given the name Asokay, after the artist name of a music project that I have been working on for some time (but which is still in stealth mode). During the last couple of days I have been testing, adjusting, adding things, removing other things, doing more testing – and preparing an HTML5/CSS3 template version that will be released soon after the WordPress theme for easy porting to other content management systems and blog engines. The first version of the Asokay theme has now been released, and you can find it on the Asokay for WordPress page.

What Asokay looks like…

The Asokay theme has a traditional two-column layout, suitable for both blogs and regular websites, with a design that will be familiar for those of you who know my free templates from before. The layout is similar to the classic andreas08 template, but the style has been reworked into a more up-to-date look. It can be said to have similarities with both the Variant Light and the Daleri Mega templates, as well as with the design of andreasviklund.com itself. This is what it looks like:

The load size is small, as I have not used any other images than the header photo. It gives Asokay a clean, minimalistic look – but it is of course perfectly possible to make the theme more visually interesting by adding background images, gradients and other effects.

Code quality and web standards

The theme was created with the Toolbox theme by Automattic as the starting point, which is a good guarantee for quality code and compability. It is a HTML5 theme styled with standards-compliant CSS3, made for the latest version of WordPress and fully compatible with the upcoming WordPress version 3.2 and newer WordPress features like custom menus, post formats and threaded comments.

…and I will be using it myself…

I will be using the Asokay theme in its original form on the official website of the Asokay music project once I launch it, and keep the public version of the theme up to date with any modifications I make for the music site. This means that this theme is pretty much built for myself and then shared with everyone who wants to use it. And as always, feedback, suggestions, bug reports and user contributions will be very welcome at all times.

Links to direct download, the live demo and more information

To download version 1.0 of Asokay theme, use this link: Asokay.zip (123 Kb .zip). There is a live demo on my WordPress theme demo site. And as mentioned in the beginning of the post, there is also an Asokay for WordPress page sorted under the WP-themes gallery.

Check it out, I hope that you will like it!

Any chance you can add this to the wordpress theme directory so that I can automatically receive updates? Might be a pain but thought i’d ask.

Thanks

Yes, I am in the process of getting it included in the official theme directory. I’ll post an entry here as soon as it is in place.
