Learning to use the semantic elements of HTML5

Post 99 of 262

One question which I have got in several e-mails is: “Why should I use HTML5 tags rather than regular (X)HTML?”. In an effort to answer that question, I recommend that anyone interested in learning and understanding the new elements of HTML5 should read the article Learning to use HTML5 semantic elements by Steven Bradley. It provides a good introduction to how the markup works in HTML5, I learned several new things from the article.

Another good link that I have posted before but which is relevant to the topic is Building web pages with HTML5 by WebMonkey. I will be writing more about my view on HTML5 during the next couple of weeks and months as I start moving over from XHTML to HTML5 in both my free website templates and WordPress themes. But until then, check these links to get familiar with the new elements. And if you know about any other good tutorial (or if you would like to write one for andreasviklund.com), don’t hesitate to post a comment or write me an e-mail.

One of the best tutorials/walkthroughs on HTML5 that I have found is http://diveintohtml5.org

Tip for HTML5 newbies: the simplest way to “switch” to HTML5 of course is to just change your document type to …HTML5 is an expansion of what is already in HTML 4.01 and XHTML.

I’m glad that the newer bits in HTML5 are finally to the point where they are stable enough for average web developers to rely on them.
